VCM is an intermediate feedstock in the production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). It is usually made by cracking ethylene dichloride (EDC) itself made from Ethylene and Chlorine Chemicals. However, in recent years there has been rapid growth in China in the production from acetylene (via calcium carbide), particularly in the remote northern and eastern provinces, where at present the siting of ethylene crackers makes no economic sense.
